My students of 2nd through 4th grades loved this game.
Survival or
Extinction is a very unique game which gives the child the perspective of
being a dinosaur who faces so many challenges for his survival. The child
has to make intelligent decisions and understand the characteristics of
the dinosaur he represent at the time. I found this game to be highly
educational and fun at the same time It is one of the few games my
students ask to play over and over again. Highly recommended for teachers
and parents alike!
We got this game for my five year old and we've been
playing it every
night after dinner. Its totally fun, especially if your getting bored with
the whole chutes and ladders type games. We play the full version and we
read the action cards to my son. You each play a dinosaur and that
dinosaur has pluses and minuses depending on who they are (ie..TREX has
great size and weapons but is slow and has below average intellegence). My
son loves the part of saying "I am a spinosaurus! I live in the desert! I
want a food token!" and he remembers EVERY time he is supposed to get that
token in his habitat. The game provides fun dinosaur and environmental
learning and is great for
building attention skills.
My 5 year old received this game for Christmas. It is the
best present
received and has been played everyday since, many times a day! My 7 year
old and 5 year old play together all the time -- both can read so it works
out great (although there is a way to play without having to read). I
enjoy playing it with them as well. Since you can assume a different
dinosaur every time you play, the game is always different. I highly
recommend this game to anyone looking for a good game. If your kids are
interested in dinosaurs, all the better.
The goal of the game is survival. Fortunately for parents
the end is nigh:
Gameplay is relatively quick. The fun of this game is that each player
travels through prehistory attempting to survive with a package of
attributes possessed by a specific dinosaur. This provides sufficient
variety and interest to keep the whole family involved. If you have a
kid who loves
dinosaurs, this game will be a hit. It won't kill you to play it, either.
My five year old "bought" this for Christmas for his 9
year old brother,
and we've played it almost every night. For younger kids, it's fun to move
the dinosaur pieces around the colorful board and roll the dino-dice. For
older kids, the facts about intelligence, speed, habitat, reproduction,
adaptability, senses, defenses, and more really increase understanding
about the dinosaurs. Plus, my sons have gotten into the habit of joyfully
yelling "Attack! Attack!" whenever someone lands on a previously occupied
space. It's a sure thing for a dino-happy kid.
As a science teacher, I'm always on the lookout for fun
games that
reinforce concepts. This game is fun-- my 3rd graders love it (and older:
former students remembered the game three years later and asked to borrow
it to play on a 6th grade free day!). It also teaches good science
concepts, unlike many board games that have a science title but then just
have the "roll and move" approach that has nothing to do with the
concepts. Herbivores, carnivores, habitat, reproduction rate, natural
disasters, speed and strength all affect your survival in this game!
So here is a game where you have to pretend you're some
type of dinosaur;
it's preferences, eating habits, ability to adapt, all of it's particular
characteristics. Oh, yes. A dinosaur-lover's dream. My 5-year-old loves this
game.
I bought 'survival or extinction' the dinosaur game on a
trip to the USA
for my kids. My daughter is 6 years old and my son is 9, both are
fascinated with dinosaurs. My wife and I played the game with our
children, and i must say, that was one of the best activities we shared
with our kids. I thought the game had an interesting angle of each one of
us becoming a different dinosaur, and competing with each other, we
definitely had our unique personalities and virtues. we were kidding each
other for days later. The children remembered so much about different
kinds of dinosaurs, their eating habits, their natural habitats and the
challenges they faced to survive. It is rare to see a game which is so
much fun and educational at the same time.
